What is a budget workshop?
A budget workshop is a meeting where the Town Board Members discuss and, as appropriate, modify the tentative budget in order to get it into a form that is appropriate for public review and comment.
What is the public’s role in a budget workshop?
The public is entitled to attend and observe the budget workshops. However, the budget workshop is a work session of the Town Board Members, and public comment is generally not allowed during these sessions. The budget workshops are simply work sessions of the Town Board to get the budget into a form that is appropriate for public review and comment. The public will have the opportunity to comment on the budget prior to final adoption.
When will the public be able to comment on the budget?
Once the Town Board adopts the tentative budget (with or without modifications) as the “preliminary budget”, the Town Board must conduct a public hearing. The public hearing is conducted after the budget workshops have already been completed. The public hearing itself must be completed before November 15. This is the appropriate time for the Public to ask the Town Board questions regarding the Budget.
